It was at the Great International Exhibition in London in 1862, that Alexander Parkes demonstrated a material called Parkesine, the first plastic. It was an organic material derived from cellulose that could be heated, then molded. The next innovation would come in 1868, when celluloid was introduced; it proved to be flammable and too dangerous to use in the era of open flame lighting. Celluloid gave way to Bakelite in 1897. Then in the pre-WWII period of the thirties, American, British and German companies began producing polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), known today as acrylic. Acrylics are very hard, as transparent as glass and and one of the high-end plastics yet today.
